As DRAM shortages and soaring prices persisted over the past year, more new PCs have been limited to 16GB of RAM, with some even reverting to the 8GB configurations common several years ago. Last November, Microsoft published hardware recommendations for Windows 11 gaming PCs, establishing 16GB of RAM as the baseline requirement for modern gaming and 32GB as the worry-free choice for multitasking. Now, Microsoft has shifted its stance, emphasizing that devices with 8GB of RAM can run Windows 11 smoothly, and confirmed it is developing a faster, more responsive version, expected to roll out as early as the end of this year.
According to Wccftech, the pressure on Microsoft to optimize memory usage stems not only from DRAM supply issues. Analysts point out that Apple's newly launched MacBook Neo laptop has placed significant pressure on the entire PC ecosystem. In addition to improving Windows 11's own memory efficiency, Microsoft needs to collaborate with partners to adopt more affordable strategies, including new chips and more aggressive pricing, to attract buyers.
When the MacBook Neo was released, many were skeptical about its performance, particularly concerned that 8GB of RAM seemed insufficient. However, Apple has proven these concerns unfounded, demonstrating excellent memory management in numerous tests. With the same 8GB of RAM, Windows PCs perform significantly worse, putting additional pressure on Microsoft.
Microsoft has now listed 8GB RAM optimization as a key focus for future Windows 11 development, indicating that system-level lightweighting will be part of its long-term technical roadmap.
