Paradox Interactive has officially announced its new strategy game, Afterworld. This is one of the few grand strategy titles from Paradox in the past decade to break away from real-world historical settings, featuring a completely original worldview set in post-apocalyptic North America. The game is now available on Steam with wishlist support enabled; the release date has not yet been announced, and Chinese language support is confirmed.

Game Trailer:
The game world of Afterworld is a semi-procedurally generated post-apocalyptic North America. While the geographical outline remains recognizable, resource distribution, tribal factions, and random crises change with each playthrough. Players start as a small group of survivors, needing to address basic survival needs such as food, water, and shelter. From there, they gradually develop from small communities into tribes, eventually establishing a vast empire spanning the continent. The game features a dynamic ideology tree system; technologies are not unlocked linearly in advance but must be acquired through exploration and encounters. For example, encountering rivers unlocks irrigation technology, contact with other tribes allows learning new religious ideologies, and discovering ruins of the old world enables excavation of lost prehistoric technologies.
Players must draft national laws, allocate scarce resources, and continually make moral choices, with every decision shaping the character of society. The wasteland also harbors unique threats—the immortal warlords known as "The Ancients." These are rulers from the old world who survived the cataclysm, wielding ancient advanced technology. Players can either conquer them by force to seize their technological legacy or form alliances for mutual benefit.
Afterworld supports single-player gameplay and includes both cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes. Players can join forces with friends to build civilizations together or wage war against each other in the wasteland. The developers have also confirmed full modding tools, allowing players to deeply modify game content and expand gameplay possibilities. Game Director Dan Lind stated, "This is the first time in a long while that we've built a complete world from scratch, and also the first time we've created a world only to destroy it ourselves. Fragments of the old civilization are scattered across the continent, waiting for players to discover and explore."
