Last year, Kingdom Hearts series creator Tetsuya Nomura delivered mixed news: he stated that his intention in making Kingdom Hearts IV was to gradually bring the series' story to a conclusion, hoping to finish it before his retirement. This statement caused considerable anxiety among fans, who mistakenly believed that the entire Kingdom Hearts series would come to an end.
Although I believe Nomura was clearly referring only to Sora's personal storyline and the current arc spanning over ten games, the thought of Kingdom Hearts reaching any form of conclusion is still somewhat disheartening. According to translations by the Kingdom Hearts news site Kingdom Hearts Insider, after the D23 showcase event, gaming media outlet 4Gamer interviewed Nana Gard, Game Director at Disney Japan's Disney and Pixar Games division. Gard revealed that the deliberate reveal of the Coco crossover featuring Heartless was intended to surprise fans and confirm it as part of Kingdom Hearts content. Additionally, she discussed the future direction of the series.
When asked about the Kingdom Hearts animated series, Gard stated that although Kingdom Hearts has been around for 25 years, the team still has "many goals they want to achieve," and this animated series represents the "first step in that direction." This indicates that building a "content ecosystem" for Kingdom Hearts is a key focus for Disney, and officials are already planning long-term developments beyond Kingdom Hearts IV and the animated series.
Her specific mention of the word "direction" recalls Tetsuya Nomura's remarks at the Kingdom Hearts II Concert in 2023. At that time, he stated that one thing "determined the direction of the series," which now seems to refer to this animated series.
