With the holding of the Phantom Blade Zero State of Play special presentation, a complete demonstration of the Lion Dance boss battle in the game thoroughly ignited the enthusiasm of players both domestically and internationally. In fact, as early as March this year, China Global Television Network (CGTN) had already produced an in-depth documentary for Phantom Blade Zero. Let's take a look!
Interview Video:
In an interview with CGTN, producer Liang Qiwei summarized the game's style as "Wuxia Punk." He stated that Phantom Blade Zero is not merely a replication of the wuxia genre, but rather a reinterpretation of the core of Eastern wuxia through modern game development logic. Liang Qiwei concluded in the interview: "Whether it's us or other developers in this niche, we all represent a microcosm of China's industrial development. Only truly good quality is genuinely good."
Action Director Yang Liu has dedicated years to traditional martial arts, insisting that all moves remain within the boundaries of human physical capability to authentically recreate the true texture of traditional martial arts. The game's entire action design was a zero-reference, high-difficulty new exploration. The team visited inheritors of the Southern Lion Dance intangible cultural heritage, absorbing the dynamic essence of folk martial arts, completely abandoning existing assets and motion templates in favor of original creation.
The Lion Dance boss battle is the best embodiment of this logic. Yang Liu repeatedly refined the performance in the motion capture studio, precisely capturing the rhythmic changes after the lion awakens, the wave-like dynamics of its fur, and even adjusting countless details like blinking and mouth movements. "The most important characteristic of the Lion Dance lies in its state of being 'similar yet not identical.' Overall, it looks like a lion, but in the details, you can feel it is performed by humans," said Yang Liu. "This allows cultural expression to go beyond the surface, truly entering the cultural matrix with greater texture."
Phantom Blade Zero will be released on October 29, 2026, launching on PC and PS5 platforms.
