NVIDIA previously confirmed at SIGGRAPH 2026 that the three AI models included in DLSS 5 rely on hardware scheduling units unique to the Blackwell architecture. Only the RTX 50 series supports this technology, leaving the RTX 4090 incompatible.
According to the latest practical tests and comparisons by overseas media Tech-Insider, the competitive landscape between the RTX 4090 and RTX 5080 has changed; it is no longer just a battle of benchmark scores.
From a foundational specification perspective, although the RTX 4090 boasts 16,384 CUDA cores and 24GB of VRAM, maintaining an advantage in raw computing power, the RTX 5080 features built-in Flip-Metering multi-frame scheduling hardware. This allows it to support DLSS 4.5 multi-frame generation, inserting up to 3 AI-generated frames within a single frame interval, whereas the RTX 4090 only supports up to DLSS 3 single-frame generation.
DLSS 5 further expands AI rendering capabilities on this basis, widening the gap in software ecosystems between the two GPU generations.
Although when all AI enhancement technologies are disabled, the RTX 4090 still leads the RTX 5080 by about 15% in 4K rasterization games, and by 12% to 16% in the 3DMark Port Royal ray tracing test.
However, recently leaked core library files for DLSS 5 from the early access version of "NBA 2K27" reached a size of 158MB, more than three times that of the previous generation's components, suggesting a substantial increase in AI model complexity.
Once DLSS 5 is officially launched, the actual smoothness of the RTX 5080 in initially supported games may surpass that of the RTX 4090, despite the latter's higher native frame rates.
Furthermore, power consumption and market conditions have further weakened the cost-effectiveness of the RTX 4090. The total board power of the RTX 5080 is 360W, a 90W reduction compared to the RTX 4090's 450W, significantly lowering requirements for power supplies and cooling systems.
In terms of launch pricing, the RTX 5080 is set at $999 (approximately 7,120 yuan), which is over 4,000 yuan cheaper than the RTX 4090's launch price of $1,599 (approximately 11,390 yuan).
Currently, thestock of brand-new RTX 4090s on the market is nearly depleted, with domestic second-hand prices rising to around 30,000 yuan. In contrast, the RTX 5080 is generally priced at around 12,000 yuan, creating a significant price gap.
Currently, 15 games are known to support DLSS 5 at launch. As the technology officially rolls out this autumn, this AI-generated rendering mode will become a watershed moment distinguishing the performance of the two GPU generations.
For users planning to use a single graphics card for "three years," the RTX 5080 clearly has a more significant advantage in terms of technical lifecycle.
