On August 25, ASUS officially confirmed that the new ROG Xbox Ally X20 handheld, developed in partnership with Xbox, will be priced at $1,299 and released on October 15, with pre-orders now open. The device features several refined upgrades over its predecessor, the ROG Xbox Ally X, focusing primarily on the screen, controls, and build quality.
The X20 features a 7.4-inch 1080p OLED touchscreen with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, supporting FreeSync Premium Pro and Dolby Vision HDR. It boasts a peak HDR brightness of 1400 nits, covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, and includes an anti-reflective coating. This OLED display is considered the most significant visual upgrade for the X20 compared to its predecessor.
In terms of core specifications, the X20 retains the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, identical to the previous Ally X priced at $999.99. In other words, buyers won't experience a generational leap in raw performance. Other improvements include TMR joysticks, a deformable D-pad, rounded face buttons, optimized shoulder buttons and triggers, and rubberized grips. The chassis uses black semi-transparent material, allowing the redesigned internal cooling hardware to be subtly visible, accented with gold details as a signature mark of the 20th Anniversary Edition. The 80Wh battery capacity remains unchanged.
ASUS is also launching a $2,499 bundle that includes the handheld console, ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses, a custom dbrand Killswitch protective case, a 68W adapter, and a Pelican Protector Case.
Regarding pricing, the X20 is about $300 more expensive than the previous Ally X, yet the processor, memory, and storage remain unchanged. Furthermore, the X20 reflects how handheld console prices have far exceeded those of traditional home consoles—although it is not positioned as a portable Xbox, its $1,299 price tag is still $500 higher than the $799.99 disc version of the Xbox Series X, and due to its handheld form factor, it involves certain compromises in performance and game compatibility.
The anniversary edition design and optional AR accessories indicate that ASUS is targeting core enthusiasts rather than the mass market. The ROG Xbox Ally X20 will reach players this autumn, when it will become clearer whether the improvements in screen and controls justify its premium price tag.
