According to the latest leaks, icons related to Xbox's unannounced "physical disc to digital" project have allegedly been discovered by netizens.
Reddit user Morichh shared two icons in the Xbox subreddit, suggesting they might be related to Microsoft's physical-to-digital conversion feature. The project is expected to allow players to convert eligible physical Xbox games into digital licenses. These two icons come from a Windows TrueType font called "Xbox Fluent v2 Regular," copyrighted in 2021, which functions similarly to symbol fonts like Wingdings. This means these icons may not be entirely new art assets.
The shared images show icons featuring a disc as the main element, accompanied by symbols representing the transition from physical media to digital format. The Reddit user explained that these icons were found in a font library by a friend who tracks Microsoft Store leaks.
Recently leaked documents mentioned that the public beta for Xbox's physical-to-digital conversion feature, along with early access to backward compatibility for original Xbox games, began in July 2026. The physical-to-digital feature is reportedly set to fully launch later this month, covering users of Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles. According to the documents, users can bind a digital license to a game by inserting a supported physical disc, but the documents do not explain the technical process for how licenses will transfer or become invalid if the disc changes ownership.
Previously, on Digital Foundry's "DF Direct" podcast, co-host John Linneman revealed that he had learned from multiple sources that Microsoft originally planned to retain some form of physical game support for the next-generation Xbox hardware. He speculated that the relevant solution might involve an external optical drive or other mechanisms to verify physical game ownership, which could be related to the rumored physical-to-digital licensing project.
