Today, the highly anticipated official gameplay demo for GTA 6 premiered on Netflix, showcasing plenty of car chases, shootouts, and other wild scenes typical of the GTA series. But what truly stood out was the romantic chemistry between the male and female protagonists, Jason and Lucia, marking a particularly special attempt for the franchise.
Players can switch between Jason (the brawnier, simpler-minded of the two) and Lucia (who appears to be the mastermind behind their operations), but from the gameplay footage we saw today, this is very much a "Bonnie and Clyde" duo, with both characters serving as co-protagonists. Even when you control one character, the other is often nearby and involved in the action. Beyond their shared criminal exploits, Rockstar also showcased sweet moments reminiscent of an ordinary couple, sharing heartwarming instances amidst their bloody criminal careers.
Jason and Lucia do ordinary, mundane things just like any other couple. They drive around together, and Lucia helps Jason buy clothes because she insists on upgrading his wardrobe; when she asks Jason for fashion advice, however, he's completely clueless. This intimacy is reflected in small details, such as holding hands while walking through a party venue, even if you're only controlling one of them. Their banter is also very sweet. Jason is somewhat tense and stoic, while Lucia brings a lighthearted and lively energy that balances him out.
I (a Kotaku reporter) couldn't help but let out a sigh when Jason knocked over Lucia's chair to shield her from gunfire while she was tied up. The man was tied up himself, yet he still put her safety first. It really made me clutch my chest and shout, "I want a partner like that too!"
Oh, and there's also a scene where they go to a strip club together? I love couples who are secure enough in their love to enjoy nightlife together.
Overall, what GTA 6 has shown so far seems to dial back the exaggerated satire of previous entries in the series, focusing instead on a more grounded crime drama. The relationship between Jay and Lucia highlights this shift. Will they end up like Bonnie and Clyde, with a tragic finale? I hope not. As it stands, their love story has already deeply moved me.
