Old Cars Require Lockpicking, New Cars Need Key Cloning: GTA 6's Car Theft Mechanic Is More Complex

According to GameSpot, GTA 6 will further refine its car theft mechanics. Players must choose different tools based on the vehicle's brand, model, and production year, rather than using a single method for all cars.

Previous entries in the series allowed players to smash windows and simply drive off. GTA 6 retains this method for older vehicles while adding a more discreet option: players can use thin lock-picking tools to open car doors.

When using lock-picking tools, players must complete a short minigame using the analog sticks on a PS5 or Xbox controller. After entering the vehicle, they also need to hotwire the ignition to drive it away.

This method does not work on newer vehicles equipped with electronic keys. For such cars, players must use a key signal replicator to perform a "relay attack," simulating the signal sent by the electronic key to remotely unlock the vehicle without triggering the alarm.

The report suggests that key signal replicators might become tools carried by Jason or Lucia, though it remains unconfirmed how exactly the two characters will obtain or use these devices.

These design choices continue the emphasis on realism seen in Red Dead Redemption 2. The report also mentions that GTA 6 includes mechanics such as refueling cars, maintaining fitness through exercise, and eating to replenish energy.
