Pictures has finally clarified the future of this legendary film franchise: despite rumors of cancellation, The Matrix 5 has been officially included in the studio's ambitious upcoming release slate. This news was confirmed during a presentation showcasing their extensive film lineup, which also announced a live-action The Jetsons movie and a new Batman sequel.
This announcement ends a two-year period of silence, during which the studio had been developing the next chapter of the series. The previous installment, The Matrix Resurrections, released in 2021, suffered a box office disappointment: with a budget of $190 million, it grossed only $160 million worldwide and held a 63% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, this did not deter the studio, and in 2024, Warner Bros. announced the commencement of production for the new film.
The biggest surprise for fans is that the Wachowskis will step down as directors for the first time in the series, handing over directing duties to Drew Goddard, known for the film The Cabin in the Woods and the Oscar-winning screenplay for The Martian.
