Windows 11's Built-in Weather App Uses 1GB of RAM

Although Microsoft has promised to optimize Windows 11 for PCs with 8GB of RAM and retracted its recommendation for 32GB, the tech giant still seems to have a long way to go in limiting the platform's memory consumption. According to foreign media reports, the Weather app in Windows 11 alone can consume over 1GB of memory.

According to Wccftech, the Weather app occupies nearly 20% of memory on a machine with 8GB of RAM. This is a surprisingly high figure for a lightweight utility, especially amid ongoing memory shortages.

Even when idle, the application consumes around 500MB of memory. When opened, memory usage spikes to over 1GB, largely due to intrusive ads within the software.

Of course, this becomes an issue since most modern laptops today max out at 8GB of RAM. In comparison, Apple's Weather app on macOS uses only 250MB of memory.

The problems with Windows 11 seem to stem from its reliance on the WebView2 framework, meaning the software operates quite differently from native Windows applications. Combined with frequent ads in the Weather app, this leads to significant consumption of critical resources on PCs.

The good news is that Microsoft is currently working to address these issues. No matter how long it takes, the tech giant is continuously improving the Windows user experience.
