Capcom has shared technical development details for the action game Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Project Director Ken Nihei stated that the core focus of reviving this classic series lies in creating unprecedented depth and dynamism in melee combat. According to the creative team's vision, the game's swordplay mechanics will surpass the standards of current titles in the genre.
The most significant innovation is the environmental defense system, which features over 300 unique parry and deflection animations. The protagonist Miyamoto Musashi's movements automatically adapt based on the opponent's size, the weapon used, and the player's spatial positioning, such as fighting with their back to the enemy or swinging their sword in narrow corridors pressed against walls. As a result, there will be no repetitive defensive maneuvers in actual gameplay, ensuring each duel has a unique presentation.
Another major challenge for the studio was crafting the non-human biomechanics of the Genma monsters. To capture realistic movements for the multi-armed boss "Kubikiri," engineers had to have four actors perform simultaneously during the motion capture sessions.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is scheduled to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4, 2026.
