Recently, Naughty Dog.exe designer Benson Russell spoke with foreign media outlet FRVR, clearly opposing the idea of investing significant resources into remaking Uncharted 1 following the model of The Last of Us Part I, arguing that it would be a pure waste of manpower and materials.
Russell believes that Uncharted 1 does not need a remake. Citing the System Shock 1 remake as an example, he pointed out that the original had clunky controls and a high barrier to entry, making a remake highly meaningful. In contrast, Uncharted 1's control scheme aligns well with mainstream third-person games, and its graphics and gameplay remain relevant today. Furthermore, PS Plus members can already play the HD Collection version, so there is no pressing need for a remake.
Russell stated that a full remake of Uncharted 1 would require the team to extensively rewrite the main storyline and add or remove key scenes, fundamentally altering the unique narrative core of the original. Moreover, he views such remakes as primarily commercial cash-grabs on nostalgia, unlikely to attract new players to the series. He has expressed similar concerns regarding the remake of The Last of Us Part I.
In his view, rather than refurbishing old titles, Naughty Dog.exe should leverage their experience from Uncharted 4 to create a brand-new prequel set during Drake's early years. Currently, Naughty Dog.exe is fully focused on developing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. While there were previous reports that Naughty Dog.exe had planned Uncharted 5, there has been no further news on its development.
