The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently completed an innovative recruitment campaign—successfully hiring over 2,000 new air traffic controllers by targeting gamers, setting a historical record for the agency's annual hires.
This April, the FAA announced the launch of a new recruitment campaign aimed at the "next generation of air traffic controllers," with a particular focus on young people who have developed strong problem-solving and multitasking skills through gaming. This strategy has clearly paid off.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy announced on social media that this recruitment drive broke several FAA records, including the highest number of candidates hired in a single year, surpassing 2,000. Duffy stated, "This April, we launched a new initiative to recruit gamers as air traffic controllers—and significantly optimized the entire hiring process to get the best and brightest talent onboard faster. The results were historic."
Drawing parallels between video games and the high-pressure, high-risk work of air traffic control might seem absurd, but this idea was not a whim of the FAA; it stemmed from genuine feedback within the agency.
In its job posting, the FAA explained: "Only about 25% of controllers hold traditional university degrees, so this recruitment effort focused on reaching young people exploring non-traditional career paths, many of whom are active in the gaming community. Feedback from exit interviews confirmed this—several controllers mentioned that their gaming experience enhanced their ability to think quickly, maintain focus, and handle complex situations."
The FAA initially set a hiring target of 8,000 people. As of August 9, Duffy revealed that 94% of the recruitment goal had been achieved. The campaign also employed a "streamlined hiring process," significantly shortening the cycle from application to onboarding.
