As artificial intelligence (AI) drives up CPU demand, Intel's production capacity has become increasingly strained, including for its Intel 7 process node. A significant reason for this is that Raptor Lake supports both DDR5 and DDR4 memory, making it more popular in the market than the subsequent Arrow Lake. This is particularly attractive amid current DRAM supply shortages and soaring prices. Several months ago, Intel stated that Raptor Lake remains a crucial part of its client strategy and will continue to have "ample supply."
According to TomsHardware, Robert Hallock, Vice President and General Manager of Technical Marketing for Intel's Client Computing Group, recently reiterated Intel's support for Raptor Lake in an interview, stating that it will continue to be a "core component" of its product portfolio for the next few years. Many consumers remain highly interested in the LGA 1700 platform due to its support for DDR4 memory, making it a solid platform in its own right.
Current inventory shortages and price instability are worsening as DRAM prices surge, with DDR5 memory prices increasing several-fold. This has led to an unexpected spike in demand for Raptor Lake in a short period. Robert Hallock acknowledged that consumers seeking more affordable hardware still prioritize the best value-for-money options, but Intel could not have predicted such sudden market changes when initially allocating production capacity. Intel plans to increase Raptor Lake supply in the future, though Robert Hallock did not provide specific details.
Earlier rumors suggested that Intel plans to launch Raptor Lake Next in 2027, which will be categorized as the Core 200 series. It will still be based on the LGA 1700 platform, support DDR4 memory, use the Intel 7 process, and feature up to 20 cores (8P+12E).
