Recently, Ary Chen, Game Director of Tides of Annihilation, gave an interview to foreign media, sharing insights on the game's narrative tone, combat design, and the recasting of the female protagonist's voice actor.
Set in a post-apocalyptic London torn apart by dimensional rifts following a catastrophe, Tides of Annihilation features Gwendoline, the last remaining human, who summons spectral knights to battle otherworldly monsters. Although the overall worldview is bleak and despairing, the development team intentionally interspersed lighthearted and humorous moments throughout the ruin-exploration gameplay to balance the narrative pacing. Examples include interactions between the protagonist and Ninianne, a girl who can transform into a bird, as well as Mercury, a shop NPC without a face who expresses emotions using two snake-like arms. These elements are designed to alleviate the heavy atmosphere, with some of the humor stemming from the producer's own dry wit.
Addressing the common misconception that the title is a Soulslike game, the director explicitly emphasized that Tides of Annihilation is not a Soulslike. The combat is designed to be easy to learn but difficult to master, allowing casual players to quickly execute stylish and fluid combos, while the variety of knight combinations provides a high skill ceiling for hardcore action enthusiasts. The game offers different difficulty levels, including a Story Mode, aiming to accommodate players of all skill levels by being accessible while retaining the depth expected of an action game.
He also addressed the highly publicized recasting of the protagonist's voice actor. Original voice actress Jennifer English withdrew from the project due to health reasons. The team expressed regret over her departure while thanking her for her contributions over the past few years. She fully supported the change and assisted the studio in selecting her successor. The developers confirmed that Gwendoline's core character remains unchanged, the voice transition has been handled smoothly, and overall development progress has not been affected.
Tides of Annihilation has not yet announced a release date. A new trailer will be released at Gamescom 2026, where an offline demo will also be available.
