Square Enix recently announced that the free trial version of the classic MMORPG Final Fantasy XI will receive a major upgrade in September 2026. This update will roll out in two phases: the regular September patch will raise the level cap to 75, followed by the removal of the 14-day time limit during maintenance in mid-to-late September.
For players looking to deeply experience the first online game in this series, the "unlimited time" is undoubtedly the most attractive change. However, the boundaries of the trial version's content remain clear:
Area Restrictions:Access is limited to areas from the original Final Fantasy XI (initial release); maps from subsequent expansions are not accessible.
Gil Cap:The maximum amount of Gil you can hold remains 100,000.
Trading Restrictions:Player-to-player trading, using the bazaar function, or accessing the Auction House are not available.
Social Restrictions:You cannot invite others to form a party, use public chat commands such as /tell, /shout, or /yell, or become a mentor.

Final Fantasy XI has been in operation since 2002, spanning over 20 years. The previous free trial used a model valid for 14 days after registration, and the time pressure discouraged many new players.
