Why Wolverine's Suit in Marvel's Wolverine Can Self-Heal? The Reason Is Actually Simple

With Marvel's Wolverine just a month away from release, we're learning more about Insomniac's new superhero game. The development team has addressed some of the most common questions players have about the upcoming blockbuster, including an explanation for why Wolverine's suit seems to possess the same regenerative abilities as his body.

《漫威金刚狼》战衣为何能自愈?原因其实很简单

In the extended gameplay demo of Marvel's Wolverine shown during State of Play, we saw the X-Men character's healing factor in action. This inevitably raised many players' questions: how exactly does his suit heal along with his body? Insomniac anticipated these questions, so when IGN asked, the developers were ready with an answer.

"You can't spend most of the game running around in tattered rags," explained Insomniac Technical Director Michael Fitzgerald concisely. "We needed to strike a balance between reflecting the gameplay and the visceral reality of brutal combat in the suit's condition, then choosing the right moment for it to restore itself."

"If your clothes stayed torn up for too long during missions," added Senior Project Designer Jess Rainer-Reed, "you wouldn't feel very powerful." Although not explicitly stated, it's obvious that if suit damage were permanent, thousands of players would test just how much they could tear up Wolverine's outfit on day one. While this is an M-rated game, Insomniac doesn't want you fighting Sentinels naked.

Wolverine's fighting style is completely different from any other hero, especially compared to Spider-Man, making permanent suit damage unrealistic. The hero's healing factor means he doesn't need to dodge knife stabs or gunshots. He constantly absorbs bullets and gets slashed by blades. If his suit couldn't heal, it would be reduced to shreds before you even left the starting area.

Although the damage to Logan's suit quickly disappears and heals along with his regeneration, this doesn't mean Insomniac is cutting corners. You won't see generic slashes and bullet holes appearing in the same spots on every suit, no matter how enemies attack you. Each suit displays damage differently; it just doesn't persist.

PlayStation also announced a range of Marvel's Wolverine merchandise, including a bundle featuring a PS5 console, a DualSense controller, and a digital copy of the game. There's also a PS5 Pro faceplate and a controller designed to look like they're coated in the same Adamantium as Wolverine's skeleton. But don't handle them too roughly—they won't heal themselves.
