Square Enix delivered an impressive performance in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 (April 1 to June 30). According to the company's latest quarterly financial report, game sales have shifted decisively toward digital channels, with digital versions accounting for 90.11% of total sales. This figure covers its HD games and MMO businesses, excluding DLC, microtransactions, and mobile game downloads.
The report shows that Square Enix's total game sales reached 7.38 million copies this quarter. Of these, 6.65 million were digital copies, while only 730,000 were physical copies, showing a significant gap. Compared to the same period last year (total sales of 4.01 million, with 3.45 million digital copies), digital sales nearly doubled, highlighting a profound shift in player consumption habits.
The strong momentum in digital sales directly boosted the company's financial performance. This quarter, Square Enix's operating income surged by 88.6% year-on-year, and net sales increased by 32.3%, exceeding market expectations.
The main drivers of growth were Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and The Thousand-Year Quest of Adventurer Elliot. The financial report specifically highlighted that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth performed steadily after launching on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S, proving the success of its multi-platform release strategy. Even niche titles like Elliot's Adventure found their audience on new platforms.
