On August 11, Microsoft pushed the mandatory cumulative update KB5121003 to Windows 11 users. From a security perspective, this patch performed excellently—fixing over 400 vulnerabilities. However, while plugging security holes, this patch also introduced numerous new problems: frequent crashes in multiple games, abnormal monitor refresh rates, HDR failures, and even loop failures with PIN code login.
The root cause has been traced to a third-party driver named inpoutx64.sys. This is a low-level component used for port access and is not directly related to games, but it is called by certain hardware-specific tools. According to user feedback, this file was installed on the system by the Razer update program. This Windows update changed underlying system mechanisms, causing a compatibility break with this driver.
The most severely affected games include Embark Studios' ARC Raiders and THE FINALS. Additionally, players have reported crashes and anti-cheat system failures in Marvel Rivals. Error messages varied widely, with some crashes even causing direct blue screen restarts. One player reported experiencing six consecutive crashes within an hour.
Embark Studios has acknowledged the issue and responded in their official channel: "We have noticed new crash issues following the Windows update (KB5121003), which may affect some players. The team is working on a fix, and we will provide updates as progress is made." Currently, there is no permanent solution, but the studio has offered temporary workarounds.
Beyond gaming, some users reported that monitor refresh rates dropped unexpectedly, screens went black, and HDR functionality failed. Windows Hello also encountered issues—some users found that their PIN login failed after every reboot, with the system regenerating keys each time, only to be corrupted again upon the next reboot, creating a loop.
More troublingly, there is no perfect exit path. Affected users confirmed that uninstalling the patch via update history does resolve all issues, but this simultaneously removes security protections against over 400 vulnerabilities. In an era of increasingly rampant attacks, this trade-off poses excessive risk. When releasing the official statement, Microsoft claimed to be "unaware of any issues," before launching an investigation and advising users to report problems through the Feedback Hub, but there is currently no timeline for a fix.
It is worth noting that recent driver-level adjustments in Windows 11 do not stop here. Previous reports indicated that the system would automatically delete NVIDIA drivers after being idle in power-saving mode for several weeks. Furthermore, Microsoft is testing new privacy settings, planning to prohibit applications from accessing cameras and microphones without authorization by default, and preparing for a major overhaul of the current right-click menu.
