Sony Steps In to "Lock Prices"? Marvel's Wolverine Pre-order Discounts Cut in Brazil, Retailer Pulls Out

Physical game collectors have always been keen on stacking various coupons when pre-ordering AAA titles to secure the best prices. However, Brazilian retailer Gamer Hut recently announced the sudden cancellation of its Marvel's Wolverine pre-orders on the e-commerce platform Shopee, sparking strong backlash from the player community, with Sony PlayStation bearing the brunt of the criticism. Yet, the underlying reasons for this incident may be more complex than they appear.

On August 20 local time, Brazilian retailer Gamer Hut issued an official statement via social media, announcing that it had stopped accepting pre-orders for Marvel's Wolverine on the Shopee platform. According to the retailer, this move stemmed from a strict "external requirement"—to keep the game listed on the platform, they had to disable all promotional discount coupons provided by the platform.

In its statement, Gamer Hut explicitly clarified that Shopee itself was not the source of this restriction. The platform routinely provides platform-funded coupons to help buyers reduce costs, without affecting retailer profits. Faced with the condition of "only allowing buyers to pay full price," Gamer Hut chose to delist the product rather than deprive consumers of their rightful platform benefits. The retailer stated: "To continue pre-orders, we would have to agree to remove this benefit enjoyed by our customers, and we do not agree to this condition." They also promised that all pre-orders placed before the suspension would be shipped as scheduled.

Following the statement, the player community quickly rallied behind Gamer Hut's transparent stance, speculating about the identity of this "external entity." Given that Marvel's Wolverine is a first-party PlayStation exclusive developed by Insomniac Games, many players immediately pointed the finger at Sony, accusing the company of implementing price controls.

However, some players have shifted their scrutiny toward Solutions 2 GO—the official distributor responsible for physical game and hardware releases for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo in Brazil. Reportedly, about a year ago, this distributor revised its pre-order policy for physical games in Brazil specifically to prevent coupons from e-commerce platforms like Shopee and Mercado Livre from undermining sales at major brick-and-mortar retailers. This suggests that strict coupon restrictions may have long been embedded in distribution agreements, with the Marvel's Wolverine incident merely reflecting this existing policy.

Nevertheless, there are still puzzling aspects to the incident: if Solutions 2 GO's strategy was to restrict coupons simultaneously on both Shopee and Mercado Livre, the reality is quite different—Marvel's Wolverine remains normally listed on Mercado Livre with its promotional benefits intact. The disparity in treatment between the two platforms has left local players thoroughly confused.

As of now, Sony has not issued any public response regarding this matter. Whether this is a communication error, friction with the distributor, or selective policy enforcement remains undetermined.
