PS Store Features Are Outdated and Refund Policy Is Unreasonable, Making It Harder for Players to Accept a Disc-Free Future

Sony is firmly pushing PlayStation toward a fully digital, disc-free future. The announcement last month sent shockwaves through the gaming industry, and Sony's Chief Financial Officer reaffirmed during an earnings call that the brand will continue this transition at a measured pace.

However, most players currently find it hard to accept a fully digital approach, primarily because the PSN Store and its related refund policies are outdated, with overall service designs that are not consumer-friendly. Launched in 2006, the PSN Store has been operating for twenty years yet still lacks many basic features standard on other major platforms, showing a clear gap compared to PC digital storefronts like Steam.

The PSN platform still does not offer a game gifting feature. During sales, the shopping cart can hold a maximum of ten titles, requiring multiple transactions for bulk purchases. Additionally, wallet balances are capped at $350, making it difficult for players to stockpile funds in anticipation of special promotions. Accounts are also subject to strict region-locking mechanisms; players cannot change their account's region after moving abroad or relocating for work, and balances across different regional servers cannot be transferred.

The current game-sharing model on the PSN platform also poses security risks. It only allows two devices to be authenticated with the same account simultaneously. To share games with family members, users must provide their full account login password, as there is no independent, secure family sharing channel.

The two platforms differ drastically in their refund policies. Steam boasts an industry-leading refund system, allowing users to request a refund if the purchase was made within the last 14 days and playtime is under two hours. In contrast, PlayStation's refund process is riddled with restrictions. Players cannot submit refund requests directly from their consoles; they must use the website or mobile app. The platform's refund criteria are also extremely strict: once a game is pre-loaded or downloaded to the console's local storage, players lose eligibility for a refund even if they have never launched the game. Many first-party exclusives open pre-loading a week in advance, and the auto-download feature often causes players to inadvertently forfeit their right to a refund.

Foreign media outlets suggest that if Sony insists on phasing out physical discs without comprehensively overhauling the PSN Store features, digital content ownership rules, and refund systems, a large number of players will switch to other gaming platforms such as PC. For now, players can only hope that Sony will simultaneously complete a comprehensive upgrade of its online services.
