"The era of unrepairable consoles has arrived—another PS5 bricked due to system boot failure, with no permanent fix available," Modyfikator89 wrote. "Technicians don't even know where to source replacement storage chips. Salvaging from a motherboard likely damaged for the same reason? You have no idea how long such a 'fix' will last. This makes repairs completely meaningless."
He pointed out that during the PS3 and PS4 era, hard drive failures could be resolved by quickly replacing the drive and reinstalling the system, with major hardware lockout issues being rare. However, nowadays, anti-consumer designs mean that expensive tech products become disposable trash after just one chip fails.
This warning has sparked widespread discussion among hardware enthusiasts. Some users pointed out that the Xbox Series X faces similar issues: "The Series X isn't much better either. If the built-in NVMe SSD fails, it's hardware-locked, turning the entire system into a useless brick—permanently dead. This design is terrifying and makes me reluctant to spend big money on it."
Another user added, "The worst part is, where are the consumer protection organizations in Europe and America? Take Xbox, for example. After every system update, the motherboard and SSD receive new encryption keys that must match. Even if you clone the current Xbox SSD, you'll have to redo the process after each update."
In today's technological landscape, consoles like the PS5 are becoming increasingly complex, but this complexity hasn't translated into stronger consumer protections.
