Scholars from the School of Foreign Languages at Beijing Institute of Technology recently published articles pointing out that AI can only replace the instrumental aspects of foreign language disciplines; it cannot directly cover or even dissolve the discipline itself. The rich humanistic attributes carried by foreign languages and the unique characteristics of cross-cultural empathetic communication are currently impossible for AI technology to replicate. The future development direction of the discipline is clear: through new training models integrating arts with sciences and engineering, it aims to produce composite foreign language talents adapted to the industrial needs of the new era.

Leveraging Beijing Institute of Technology's strong foundation in science and engineering, the School of Foreign Languages has taken the lead in implementing practical initiatives in recent years. It has introduced new courses tailored for undergraduate and master's students, such as Experimental Linguistics, Computer-Assisted Translation, Data-Driven Pragmatics Research, Introduction to Psycholinguistics, and Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience, completely breaking away from the outdated humanities-only teaching framework of traditional foreign language majors.

The school has also collaborated with other advantageous engineering departments within the university to implement deep interdisciplinary training. It has partnered with the School of Artificial Intelligence to offer a dual-degree program in English and Artificial Intelligence, with the School of Mechanical and Vehicular Engineering to offer a dual-degree program in German and Vehicle Engineering, and with the School of Computer Science to establish doctoral research points in language understanding and intelligent translation, truly breaking down resource barriers between different disciplines.

These successful training explorations fully demonstrate that under the impact of the AI wave, the original value of foreign language disciplines will not only remain intact but can be further extended and expanded. It is entirely possible to pioneer a new model for cultivating composite foreign language talents with multiple skills and specializations in the deep intersections of different disciplines. This is precisely the new mission and opportunity bestowed upon traditional foreign language disciplines by the current era of rapid development.

Many people's misconceptions about foreign language learning remain stuck at the level of viewing it merely as a tool for memorizing vocabulary and practicing grammar, ignoring the cultural systems associated with language, cross-cultural critical thinking skills, and its composite application value in interdisciplinary contexts. In the future, composite talents who master foreign language tools while adding expertise in another vertical field will become the scarcest high-quality talents in the AI era, with no possibility of being easily replaced by technology.
