One of the most talked-about stories in the gaming world this week has been the leak of GTA 6 content, which appears to have been orchestrated to hype up a cryptocurrency known as a "memecoin" for profit. Recent reports have shed light on how Rockstar Games internally responded to the incident.
According to Bloomberg, Rockstar has not yet identified the leaker or explained how the breach occurred. The report states that a Rockstar executive sent a memo to employees this week, "condemning the leakers and promising that this incident would not affect the excellent work they have done."
Additionally, it has been reported that Rockstar does not intend to change its GTA 6 marketing plans due to this leak. There had been speculation that the leak might affect the release of an extended preview scheduled for August 28 on Netflix, but apparently, that will not be the case.
In December 2023, after the first GTA 6 trailer was leaked, Rockstar quickly reacted by releasing the trailer ahead of schedule, so there is precedent for Rockstar adjusting its plans in response to leaks.
GTA 6 suffered a massive leak in 2022. At the time, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that it was "very frustrating and upsetting," but the leak did not have a financial impact on the company. However, since the latest leak, Take-Two's total market value has dropped by over $2 billion this week, though other factors beyond the leak itself may be at play.
It has been revealed that Take-Two has issued subpoenas to Microsoft and Discord in an effort to identify those responsible for the leak.
GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
