Since ancient times, the chessboard has been likened to a battlefield. But what if it were transformed into a Souls-like real-time strategy game? Recently, an indie game called "Pawned Souls" was released for free, turning chess into a Souls-like experience. Interested players should check it out!
"Pawned Souls" is not a traditional turn-based SRPG. Instead, on a classic black-and-white chessboard, players take on the role of the pawn, the weakest chess piece, challenging various other pieces along the way until finally defeating the opponent's king.
· As the weakest piece, the pawn controlled by the player can only move or attack one square at a time in any direction (forward, backward, left, right, or diagonally). Other pieces follow standard chess movement and attack rules. Players must strategically anticipate enemy movements to dodge attacks or land finishing blows.
· The developer explained that pawns can move in eight directions because, under standard chess rules, they can only move forward, which would make the game unplayable. Even so, dodging and countering the movements and attacks of other pieces remains extremely difficult, especially when facing the Queen, the ultimate boss. Defeating her requires sharp judgment and a bit of luck.
