Yesterday, the highly anticipated 30-minute gameplay demo for Grand Theft Auto VI premiered on Netflix and has now officially launched on YouTube. This trailer revealed a wealth of content and new details about Rockstar's latest title, including the first confirmed returning character from previous games. However, even if you've played GTA Online, you probably don't remember this character very well.
In the final minutes of the extended GTA 6 demo, Jason and Lucia take on a job as bodyguards (and part-time babysitters) for a wealthy young man and his friends. When they meet at the airport, Lucia refers to their employer as "Val." Later, when they go to pick up the rich kid who just got off the plane, he calls her "Tina" and gives her a hug. From this, it's easy to infer that the contact's full name is Valentina. In GTA Online, there is also a female character with the same name, similar appearance and voice, who serves as a contact for the wealthy.
According to discoveries by the GTA Wiki and other player communities, this Valentina is the same character who first appeared in the "Money Fronts" update for GTA Online in 2025.
What evidence proves they are the same person? In both GTA Online and GTA 6, she wears elegant clothing, sports a gold necklace, and has a M.O.L.E in the exact same spot on her face. Of course, the leap in graphical fidelity means Valentina looks much more realistic in GTA 6 compared to her Online counterpart, which was built on Xbox 360-era technology. However, the shared name, consistent overall appearance, matching details like the facial M.O.L.E, and identical role strongly suggest that the developers intended them to be the same character.
You might wonder: what role did Valentina play in Online? In fact, she only appeared in a single cutscene, introducing the player to Mr. Faber, who had job offers, and then... that was it. She left San Andreas the next day. She wasn't a particularly memorable or major character, but she was still an official part of the GTA series.
Valentina is currently the first known returning series character confirmed for GTA 6. However, some might ask, "Wait, doesn't Phil Cassidy count?" Indeed, in the second trailer for GTA 6, a character resembling Phil can be briefly seen—a character who previously appeared in 3D-era GTA titles like GTA 3 and Vice City. But the different GTA universes are separate: characters from the 2D era do not appear in 3D-era games, and 3D-era characters like Phil do not appear in HD-era titles like GTA 6.
There are also characters like radio host Lazlow, who appear across different GTA universes, but Rockstar's lore states that they are simply different individuals who share the same name, similar appearance, and profession. While this setup may seem odd and unnecessary, it is the official canon. Therefore, Phil isn't considered a returning character; he's merely a new interpretation of an old character, making his first appearance in the HD Universe. Hopefully, that clears things up.
On that note, Valentina is unlikely to be the only returning character in GTA 6. GTA 5 already featured numerous characters from previous titles, such as Packie and Brucie, who were later added to Online. So I'd bet that other characters from GTA 4 and GTA 5 will either make cameo appearances or play more significant roles in the story. Once GTA 6 officially launches in November, we'll find out exactly which old characters are making a comeback.
