NVIDIA's next-generation DLSS 5 technology, which has not yet been officially released, was recently successfully cracked by community developers. The core DLSS 5 neural rendering function, originally exclusive to the RTX 50 series Blackwell architecture, can now run normally on RTX 40 series graphics cards.
This crack incident originated from the accidental leak of the pre-release installation files for NBA 2K27. The nvngx_dlssnr.dll dynamic link library included in the version fully exposed the core of DLSS 5, namely the NR (Neural Rendering) technology.
According to NVIDIA's official restrictions, this core feature is only compatible with RTX 50 series graphics cards based on the Blackwell architecture, leaving the previous generation RTX 40 series with Ada Lovelace architecture unsupported.
ButUncle Burrito, a well-known mod developer in the RenoDX Discord community, broke this device lock through reverse engineering, achieving functional compatibility across two generations of graphics cards.
According to Uncle Burrito, the core of DLSS 5 does not rely entirely on hardware exclusive to the RTX 50 series. Its computational logic is mainly based on FP8 floating-point operations. In terms of hardware, all RTX 40 series cards come standard with fourth-generation Tensor Cores that natively support FP8, so there is no shortfall in physical performance.
The real reason for the feature being disabled is simply that the dll file contains exclusive CUDA binary instructions recognizable only by the Blackwell architecture, deliberately blocking access for Ada architecture devices.
The cracking process this time follows the same logic as when players previously unlocked the DLSS 3 frame generation feature for RTX 20/30 series cards. Developers precisely located code segments in the library files incompatible with the Ada architecture, created custom patches by manually replacing and adding adaptation instructions, and ultimately achieved feature porting.
Currently, flagship models like the RTX 4080 Super have been successfully tested. By injecting patches via tools like ReShade and RenoDX, DLSS 5 neural rendering mode can be forcibly enabled in AAA titles such as Control.
Based on actual testing of visuals and stability, the RTX 4080 Super runs stably with DLSS 5 unlocked, without issues such as widespread texture corruption, screen tearing, crashes, or system freezes.
It is important to note that the currently leaked DLSS 5 files are still early development versions. The actual image quality and performance observed on the RTX 40 series do not represent the final release version.
