Obbe Vermeij, a veteran Rockstar Games employee, recently responded to the massive gameplay leak of Grand Theft Auto VI, calling it "no big deal" for the studio.
Unless you've been completely cut off from the world or plan to disconnect entirely before November 19 to avoid spoilers, you're surely aware that the most anticipated game globally faced a wave of content leaks this week. The hacker group Cyberleek somehow obtained game assets and has been releasing gameplay clips almost daily.
Throughout the incident, Rockstar and Take-Two have maintained public silence, with only court records confirming that both parties are investigating the source of the leak. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier recently reported that the development team feels "frustrated and exhausted" due to the continuous leaks, but a former studio member believes these leaks are not a major issue.
Former Rockstar Games Technical Director Obbe Vermeij (who served until the release of Grand Theft Auto IV) responded to the leak on X, urging people not to overreact and calling the whole situation "much ado about nothing." Vermeij stated that Rockstar's secrecy policy is essentially just a marketing strategy, and this incident is merely some game footage leaking early.
The former Rockstar developer further pointed out that 90% of players "won't spend time searching for leaked clips online"; they neither have the energy nor do they "want to be spoiled." In his view, the development team is likely "a bit annoyed" by this, "but that's about it."
For comparison, Vermeij mentioned that he was working at the studio when the "Hot Coffee" incident broke out. He stated that while the event was "a nightmare" for management, its impact on the actual development work at Rockstar North was quite limited. Vermeij believes that, overall, this leak is just a "minor hiccup," far less severe than the Hot Coffee incident back then.
Admittedly, the Hot Coffee mod incident had a much greater overall impact. But imagine someone casually leaking content from the industry's top-tier game, which represents nearly a decade of the team's hard work, just for a cryptocurrency scam. Rockstar's developers certainly wouldn't take it lightly. While the currently leaked content doesn't involve core secrets, no one can predict whether more serious leaks will follow.
