The Witcher 4 Director: Initially Wanted Geralt as the Protagonist Instead of Ciri

Since the official announcement that Ciri will be the main protagonist of The Witcher 4, many veteran players have expressed regret, hoping Geralt would continue as the lead in the new title. Recently, Philipp Weber, Narrative Director of The Witcher 4, responded to player requests online, sharing the development team's journey.

Weber stated that he fully understands fans' feelings, admitting that during the early stages of The Witcher 4's development, he himself hoped Geralt would remain the protagonist. He said CDPR's current important task is to prove through The Witcher 4's story that Ciri is capable of carrying the new entry in the series, and the team is taking this challenge very seriously.

Weber also emphasized that Geralt will not completely disappear; he will still play a very important role in the story of The Witcher 4, just no longer as the primary protagonist.

The Witcher 4 aims for a 2028 release and is CDPR's largest open-world RPG project to date. The story focuses on Ciri, who has grown into a witcher, exploring her unique code of conduct and adventures.

While waiting for The Witcher 4, players can experience Geralt's concluding story: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's major DLC "Old Times" is scheduled for release in 2027, serving as the final chapter of Geralt's story and set in Dandelion's hometown of Rinde. On September 29, The Witcher 3: Remastered Edition will also officially launch, with free upgrades available for owners of the original version.
