Recently, Nintendo Japan's official customer service issued an account security notice, reminding Switch players to regularly verify the send/receive functionality of the email address linked to their Nintendo accounts to avoid the risk of losing their accounts.
According to the official statement, all critical account operations, such as changing passwords, updating the linked email address, and receiving two-factor authentication codes, require sending confirmation emails to the linked email address. If the original linked email address is invalid and cannot receive emails, players will be unable to change their email address on their own.
If the email address becomes invalid, the only way to change the linked email is to submit an official Nintendo application form, providing information such as the old email address, account date of birth, and account creation time for identity verification, and have customer service assist with the email change manually. The official warning specifically states that if the email address becomes invalid and key information such as the account's date of birth, creation time, and console serial number are also forgotten, there is a risk of permanently losing the account with no possibility of recovery.
The official recommendation is that if your current email address is about to be deactivated, you should replace it with a valid, active email address in the account settings page while it can still receive emails normally. Do not wait until the email address completely stops working before taking action. This security notice also applies to Nintendo accounts linked to Switch 2 consoles.
