Last Friday, an unofficial trailer for a superhero game leaked online. EA has officially confirmed that the leaked footage is genuine content from Motive Studio's upcoming Iron Man game.
EA's official X account for Marvel's Iron Man responded to the leaked video (via IGN): "Well, this didn't go according to our plan. But since everyone has seen it, we have more content waiting to be shown. We'll see you when Everythinggj is ready."
This trailer is clearly taken from in-development gameplay footage, lasting two and a half minutes and featuring both cutscenes and actual combat sequences. In the video, Tony Stark flies through a city resembling New York, battling enemies on the ground and in the air, and even visits the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier soaring through the sky.
My first reaction after watching the video was, "Alright, I'd play this game." Although many details in the game world are still unfinished, such as low-resolution textures and incomplete cutscenes, Iron Man's flight mechanics are smooth, and the combat offers considerable depth. Iron Man's suit is equipped with various weapons, including rockets, cluster missiles, and repulsor beams. Additionally, Stark can engage in melee combat, brutally beating enemies and throwing them around—one particularly impressive move involves him suddenly accelerating into a sprint, slamming an enemy directly into a wall.
The video also showcases what appears to be an armor customization system—which makes sense given Stark's constant tinkering with his gear. Tony Stark's appearance is similar to his Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart, but he is clearly not modeled after Robert Downey Jr. However, the game does borrow other elements from the MCU films, such as the holographic halo effect seen during close-ups of Downey's face in the movies.
The trailer is labeled "August 26 Beta," indicating it was produced recently. The video also contains placeholder text for the release window, suggesting it was originally intended to be the first wave of EA's marketing campaign for the game's Early Access launch. This aligns with the game's development progress: Marvel's Iron Man was officially announced in 2022, meaning it has been in development for at least four years. Game development often sees rapid progress in the final stages, so the version of the game shown in this video may be much more complete than it appears.
This Iron Man game is one of several superhero titles EA planned to develop, but not all projects are still moving forward. The Black Panther game, announced by the company in 2023, was canceled last year. Recent reports suggest that EA plans significant layoffs following its acquisition, with employees bracing for the worst. However, at least for now, Marvel's Iron Man appears unaffected.
