GTA VI Character Switching Between Male and Female Protagonists Restricted; Certain Missions Lock Characters

Rob Nelson, Co-Head of Studio and Development Director at Rockstar Games, recently explained the character-switching mechanism between the two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, in GTA 6, and when players can freely switch between them.

Nelson stated that some missions in the game force players to use a specific character, some require switching between Jason and Lucia, and others allow players to choose their character and switch at any time.

In an interview with Famitsu, Nelson discussed the development team's design philosophy regarding character switching and restrictions on player switching.

Nelson told Famitsu: "Sometimes, (character switching) is restricted by story progression. During certain points in the game's narrative, you may be unable to switch from one character to another for specific reasons. Some missions allow you to switch characters at will, but there are also parts where we want players to experience the story from a particular character's perspective, similar to Grand Theft Auto V, so we restrict character switching."

Nelson then explained why the development team forced players to use Jason in a specific scene.

"There's a mission that takes place in a high-rise apartment building. Initially, this mission was designed to allow players to freely switch between two characters. However, we felt it would be more natural for Jason, given his background as a special forces member, to take charge of the operation, so we ultimately decided to lock the character. This mission occurs early in the game, so we felt it would seem unnatural if Lucia were leading and calling the shots while the two made their way through the area."

Correspondingly, Nelson provided an example of a mission where players must switch between Jason and Lucia.

"Some actions force players to switch characters. In the trailer, we showcased a mission where the duo escapes by car after robbing a bank. Initially, players control Jason, who is seated in the car, firing at pursuing police vehicles while Lucia drives. Later in the mission, players need to switch characters. This time, players control Lucia driving the car, while Jason and Raul continue shooting at the police from the back seat."

Finally, Nelson introduced another scenario where players have complete freedom to switch between the two protagonists.

"There are also missions designed in this way. For instance, in the scene at the end of the trailer where the duo is attacked, players can freely switch between Jason and Lucia at any time."
