Microsoft recently released the KB5101684 update for all versions of Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, focusing on enhancing system reliability and responsiveness. Devices with 8GB of RAM or less show the most significant improvements.
File Explorer is a key focus of this optimization. After the update, jump lists and recent files open faster, and response times for file sharing operations and switching between multiple desktops have also improved.
The reliability of loading the system tray area in tablet mode on touch devices has been synchronously improved. View preference settings for the Start menu are now correctly retained, eliminating the issue of resets after switching.
Reliability upgrades for the lock screen and login interface are most noticeable on low-memory devices. The startup speed of the Start menu and taskbar has also improved, eliminating the need to wait several seconds for them to load.
Microsoft has also optimized the cleanup process after update installation to reduce resource usage. Previously, Windows updates required a high-load cleanup phase that made lower-spec PCs nearly unusable during that time; this issue has now been alleviated.
The app search function has also been improved, allowing users to more accurately find installed apps even when entering misspelled or partial app names. These optimizations apply to PCs with any amount of memory, making the system feel more responsive whether you have 8GB or 128GB of RAM.
Additionally, KB5101684 includes experience improvements for File Manager, Windows Hello, Windows Search, and system sounds. Microsoft has recently stated its commitment to improving Windows 11 performance on PCs with 8GB of RAM, and this update represents part of that promise being fulfilled.
