Recently, an online shopping mishap where a Van Cleef & Arpels necklace originally priced at 14,100 yuan was purchased for 55 yuan sparked heated discussion on social media.
The person involved, Ms. Wang, introduced that the incident occurred around 0:50 AM on August 19. While browsing an e-commerce platform to select a necklace, she unexpectedly came across a mini butterfly necklace from the Van Cleef & Arpels official flagship store listed at only 55 yuan.
At first, she suspected a system glitch on the page. She exited to check other product prices, which displayed normally. Upon returning to the product page, she successfully placed and paid for the order at 55 yuan.
After placing the order, Ms. Wang discovered on social media that several luxury necklaces worth tens of thousands were listed by users at only 100 yuan that night. She thus judged that it was likely a system failure on the part of the brand or the platform.
Shortly after the order was generated, Ms. Wang received a call from a Van Cleef & Arpels staff member. The representative stated that the low price was caused by a platform system bug, not a brand pricing error, and hoped that Ms. Wang would voluntarily apply for a refund.
Ms. Wang then contacted the platform's customer service, who replied that the platform would not proactively liaise with merchants; consumer complaints must be submitted before the platform can intervene.
According to the order information, the latest scheduled shipping date was August 21, but the brand never arranged shipment. The official price of the necklace in question is 14,100 yuan, representing a huge price difference.
Subsequently, Ms. Wang shared her shopping experience online, where it gained significant traction. In an interview with the media, Ms. Wang stated that she did not urge the merchant to ship. If the brand had shipped normally, she would have considered it lucky; if the order could not be fulfilled, she would have treated it merely as a system glitch, sharing it just as an amusing anecdote for netizens.
On August 22, the case saw new developments. Ms. Wang revealed to the media that on the evening of August 21, e-commerce platform staff proactively called her, confirming that the root cause of the low-price error was a platform system glitch, and the brand merchant was not at fault.
The call recording shows that the platform staff first apologized for the incident, offered assistance with the refund, and provided an additional 5 yuan as a goodwill compensation.
Ms. Wang generously accepted this resolution. She admitted that she fully understood the difficulties faced by frontline platform staff, and as a fellow worker, she did not wish to make things overly difficult for them.
Ms. Wang also clarified that she is financially capable of purchasing this luxury necklace. She never had the intention of exploiting the system and never urged the merchant to fulfill the shipment.
Looking back at publicly reported similar pricing bug incidents, merchants refusing to ship after consumers place low-price orders often attract widespread criticism from netizens. In contrast, Ms. Wang's understanding approach and friendly negotiation have been praised by many netizens as rare and commendable.
