Deus Ex and immersive sim pioneer Warren Spector has announced his departure from the game development industry, with one of the most influential creators in gaming making way for the next generation of talent.
Warren Spector, one of the most iconic figures in the gaming industry, has decided to retire and will no longer be involved in game development.
Spector is considered one of the founders of the immersive sim genre, best known for his work on Deus Ex and Thief during his time at Ion Storm. Later, he developed Disney Epic Mickey and its sequel, before joining Otherside Entertainment to work on a spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld. He had previously worked on Ultima Underworld at Looking Glass Technologies in the early 1990s.
Spector, now 70 years old, announced the news on LinkedIn, reflecting on his nearly 45-year career during which he worked on 17 games and contributed to board and tabletop games, among other things. Spector admitted to having mixed feelings about retirement, stating that he no longer feels the same passion for the gaming industry as he once did and believes it's time for the new generation of developers to have their stage.
"I want to say to everyone reading this that the problems in game development have not been solved—I hope there will be plenty of experimentation and innovation in the future. And to all the young developers, as I've said before and will say again, your job is to make people forget that someone like me ever existed."
Spector acknowledged that he still has a strong desire to make three more games (though he declined to reveal their titles) and plans to write several books while offering valuable consulting services to those in need. Over a decade ago, Spector began working on System Shock 3, but the project appeared to be shelved a few years later.
Spector's final project, Thick as Thieves, was released earlier this year. Initially announced as an immersive PvPvE simulation game, it was later redesigned as a single-player and co-op adventure. Due to the game failing to meet expectations within weeks of its release, Otherside Entertainment announced it would cease content updates.
