The long-awaited Netflix live-action Mobile Suit Gundam film has finally revealed more details. Actor Noah Centineo recently disclosed on a podcast that the movie will be a "grand action-romance space epic," describing it as a "non-Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet in space."
Centineo confirmed that the story will take place in the Universal Century timeline, the core setting of the Gundam series and the stage for the original Mobile Suit Gundam and many other classic works. He further explained that the film will tell the story of "star-crossed lovers" from opposing sides of a generational conflict. This aligns closely with the Gundam series' longstanding war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon.
In addition to previously announced stars Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, Anyone But You) and Centineo, the film will feature an ensemble cast including Jason Isaacs (Star Trek: Discovery) and Michael Mando (Spider-Man: Brand New Day).
Directed by Jim Mickle, filming wrapped in late July of this year, though Netflix has not yet announced a specific release date. Notably, the project was initially directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island), whose concept art released in 2021 featured the original RX-78-2 Gundam. Vogt-Roberts was later replaced by Jim Mickle.
For Gundam fans, there is much more to look forward to beyond this live-action film. A new anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, is scheduled for release in 2027, and a game set in the same universe, Gundam: Rogue Orbit, is planned for launch next year.
