Hideo Kojima recently reviewed Netflix's new thriller The Last House. Despite harsh criticism from both critics and audiences, he surprisingly found something praiseworthy, pointing out its similarities to the Death Stranding series.
Kojima shared on social media: "I watched The Last House. Isolation? Loneliness? There were moments in the film that felt somewhat reminiscent of Death Stranding in atmosphere."
The Last House, directed by Louis Leterrier (director of Now You See Me and Fast X), is set against the backdrop of a mysterious global disaster, where a family of four is trapped inside their home. Cut off from the outside world, the protagonists must learn how to survive the catastrophe. However, this premise and a strong cast couldn't save the movie. On Rotten Tomatoes, it received only a 27% approval rating from critics and 28% from audiences, marking a dismal performance. Critics described the script as "underdeveloped" and complained about insufficient character development.
However, Hideo Kojima has already explored themes of loneliness, isolation, and survival in the first Death Stranding and its sequel, which is why he could resonate with the film's premise. In the game, courier Sam Bridges traverses a desolate and dangerous America to connect isolated node cities.
