Recently, a Reddit user shared their experience with a new type of graphics card scam. After ordering an RTX 5080 graphics card on Amazon, they received only a cheap thermos cup. The seller claimed it was a free gift and that the graphics card would arrive later.
It is understood that the user spent nearly $1,400 (approximately 9,980 RMB) to order an MSI RTX 5080 16G SUPRIM Liquid SOC graphics card. Although this price was significantly higher than the official suggested retail price, due to the scarcity of high-end graphics cards in stock and the user's urgency to purchase, they did not carefully verify the seller's "non-Amazon direct sales" status.
When the package arrived, there was no graphics card box inside. Instead, there was an ordinary box labeled "VACUUM CUP," containing only a standard thermos cup.
Here's the key point: a flyer included in the package claimed that due to logistics issues, the graphics card would be delivered within 7 business days, and the thermos cup was an "extra gift" from the seller as an apology.
Additionally, the flyer provides a fake customer service email, "Support@AmazonService.xyz," and informs users that they can apply for a full refund if they do not wish to wait.
These seemingly thoughtful after-sales compensations are actually carefully designed scam traps. The scammers exploit the player's expectation that "the item has been shipped, just delayed" to significantly lower the victim's guard. They also include a fake Amazon customer service email in the flyer,诱导 users to consult on progress and apply for refunds through this off-platform channel.
Once users communicate outside the platform's official channels, Amazon cannot monitor the order's after-sales process. After the 7-day dispute window expires, the scammers can completely disappear and run off with the money.
Commenters also pointed out that the fake after-sales email uses a niche ".xyz" domain. Major e-commerce platforms like Amazon would never use such cheap, low-reputation domains for official customer service channels, which is the key feature players can use to quickly identify the scam.
Currently, the player detected the anomaly in time and did not fall for the flyer's deceptive claims. They have initiated a refund request through Amazon's official order channel to protect their rights, temporarily safeguarding their personal assets.
