Overclocking Potential Greatly Increased! RTX 5090 Power Limit Unlocked to 700W

Recently, hardware enthusiasts discovered a new method to push NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards beyond their official power limits. The latest version of the mVolt+ tool unlocks low-level power adjustment options for the Blackwell architecture, allowing the RTX 5090's power consumption to surge to 700W without requiring hardware modifications (shunt-mod).

The RTX 5090's official TGP (Total Graphics Power) limit is 575W, meaning the card's power consumption in experiments exceeded its rated value by approximately 26%. Version 0.36 of mVolt+ adds many control options not found in standard overclocking software, allowing users to independently adjust core and memory power limits, GPU frequency ranges, and voltage offsets for various internal domains of the chip (Core, XBAR, SYS, Video).

Among these, the Core Power Limit is key to this experiment. Standard tools like MSI Afterburner typically only allow access to the power walls preset in the VBIOS, whereas mVolt+ can remove additional internal restrictions, enabling the graphics card to continuously increase power consumption until it hits the next level of constraints.

Reddit user u/SyncFail_ reported that their RTX 5090 successfully reached a power draw of 700W. Other users have demonstrated levels between 600-650W. In some experiments, the GPU clock stabilized around 3.2GHz and the XBAR clock at approximately 2.8GHz, whereas previous results using MSI Afterburner only reached 3.0GHz.

The RTX 5080 has also broken through official limits. An ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5080 reached 680W during stress testing, despite the model's official VBIOS TGP cap being 450W.

Actual performance varies due to individual differences between cards. According to user feedback, unlocking the Core Power Limit on the RTX 5060 Ti only increased the power headroom by about 20W.

It should be noted that such experiments are not suitable for daily use. Significantly increasing power consumption places additional strain on the power delivery system, power connectors, power supply unit, and cooling system. Therefore, the fact that an RTX 5090 can reach 700W does not mean this mode is suitable for long-term stable operation.

However, mVolt+ has gained favor among overclocking enthusiasts precisely because it can bypass limitations previously thought nearly impossible to break without hardware modifications. Now, RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 users have access to more extreme overclocking headroom—at the cost of a massive increase in power consumption.
