GTA 6 Adds Suppressive Fire Mechanic to Avoid Killing Police and Civilians

Earlier today, the Netflix trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI revealed a wealth of significant content, and developers confirmed new gameplay mechanics for the series in interviews. This installment will introduce a suppression fire system for the first time, allowing players to use this mechanic during urgent situations like store robberies to avoid killing police and civilians whenever possible.

Rob Nelson, Development Director and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar Games, stated in an interview with Japan's Famitsu magazine that the team has added numerous new mechanics to this latest open-world title, making heists and escapes more dynamic. When asked if there are other ways to make money besides stealing and reselling cars, Rob responded that players can also profit by robbing stores. However, if players enter a store with visible firearms and are spotted, NPCs might even call the police before you make your move.

Once the police arrive, players have multiple ways to escape, not all of which require indiscriminate killing. Nelson explained, "We've added a new shooting direction control mechanic. You don't have to aim directly at the police; instead, you can intentionally miss and shoot near them. This can intimidate and disrupt them, buying you time to escape."

Nelson continued, "We want to give players the choice to avoid killing police or civilians while escaping. In other words, you can suppress them to keep them at bay and seize the opportunity to escape, which aligns with the storyline of Jason and Lucia trying to evade legal consequences. Unless they are cornered with no other options, it wouldn't make sense for the two to stay and engage in a prolonged shootout with the police, as that would contradict their character logic. Of course, you can choose to open fire directly, but this will affect your reputation, and the police in this game are quite formidable."

Based on the latest 26-minute trailer and other previews, players can also subdue enemies by knocking them out or injuring them. GTA VI introduces a criminal record system that tracks player behavior throughout the game, causing the world's attitude toward the player to change—ranging from psychopathic killer to high-IQ thief, with varying evaluations. The developers cited a scene from the trailer as an example: protagonist Jason shoots out the tires of a police truck to escape, demonstrating a non-lethal approach.

Nelson added, "There are many scenarios in the game where you can progress without killing anyone. In the trailer scene mentioned earlier, the player shoots out the tires to flip the police car, but none of the pursuing officers die. If Jason had aimed directly at the police, he could have killed them, but he chose not to."
