Over 10,000 Game Industry Layoffs in 2026 as 29 Studios Shut Down, Averaging 44 Job Losses Per Day

According to Insider Gaming, 2026 has become one of the worst years for layoffs in the history of the gaming industry. As of August, approximately 10,618 jobs have been cut across the global gaming industry, affecting 126 companies and resulting in the closure of 29 studios. These are only the confirmed numbers; the actual number of unemployed individuals could be hundreds higher, yet unaccounted for.

Based on confirmed figures, an average of 44 people have lost their jobs every day in the gaming industry so far in 2026. This "unfortunate milestone" marks the complete fade of the pandemic-era industry boom—during the global stay-at-home period in 2020, phenomenal hits like Among Us and Fall Guys exploded in popularity, Final Fantasy XIV servers were overwhelmed, and the industry enjoyed a brief golden age. Now, as people return to normal life, enthusiasm for game consumption has clearly cooled.

The report points out that the wave of layoffs is driven by a combination of multiple factors. Consumer electronics, especially consoles and PCs, have seen continuous price hikes due to shortages of storage components, making gaming an increasingly expensive hobby. Players with tight budgets struggle to keep up with the release pace of new titles. Additionally, the "siphon effect" of GTA 6 on the 2026 holiday season has made many publishers hesitant to launch new games around its release window, further squeezing industry revenue.

Publishers once considered "too big to fail" have also been hit hard. Both Ubisoft and EA are reported to be struggling due to the industry's upheaval. Microsoft's Xbox Game Studios have undergone significant layoffs, with rumors suggesting the company may be considering shutting down its console division. Meanwhile, pricing challenges for the PS6 in the current market environment and rumors that Nintendo may be forced to raise the price of the Switch 2 again highlight the collective anxiety among hardware manufacturers.

Despite the alarming figures, the report argues that this is not the end of the gaming industry—such a massive market will not vanish overnight. The current situation resembles a "great reset": publishers are downsizing to adapt to shrinking demand, forcing many talented professionals to leave the industry they love. The worst may yet be to come, as the industry winter continues.
