Opportunistic theft is all too common, and the massive Gamescom in Cologne is no exception. On August 28, an indie game developer exhibiting at Gamescom reported that their expensive computer equipment had been stolen. Not only did they suffer a financial blow, but the loss of precious data from their computer dealt an even heavier emotional blow.
·Ryan Laley attended Gamescom with his new game "Mimic," having invested heavily in the event. When he arrived at his booth on the morning of August 28, he was shocked to find his latest Alienware laptop missing, realizing immediately that it had been stolen.
·Subsequently, multiple computers in the same area were also found to have been stolen. The victims have reported the incident to the police, but authorities stated that due to restrictions under Germany's GDPR data protection regulations, they cannot currently access or review the on-site surveillance footage. It will take at least 4–6 weeks before a substantive investigation can begin. Fortunately, the booth was insured, allowing for compensation claims, but the important data stored on the devices is gone for good.
·Ryan Laley stated that suffering both financial and emotional blows, coupled with the loss of his display equipment, meant his trip to Gamescom effectively ended early. It was truly a disheartening experience.
