The Elder Scrolls and Diablo TV/Film Adaptations on the Horizon? Microsoft in Talks for Over a Dozen Game Adaptations

Xbox appears ready to go all-in on game adaptation projects, pitching multiple titles to streaming platforms and production companies. According to Puck, Microsoft and Xbox have been negotiating a package deal involving "over a dozen games" for adaptation.

The media specifically mentioned titles including Halo (another adaptation), The Elder Scrolls, World of Warcraft, and Diablo. It is reported that Netflix, Paramount, and Universal Pictures have all approached Microsoft, with Microsoft seemingly aiming for a potential deal valued at around $300 million.

Xbox's track record in film and TV adaptations has been mixed

Amazon Prime Video's Fallout series achieved tremendous success; the Minecraft movie surpassed $1 billion in global box office revenue, and a sequel is currently in development.

In contrast, the live-action Halo series was canceled after just two seasons, facing heavy criticism for its portrayal of Master Chief and the Covenant. Other projects, such as the Netflix Gears of War series, have been stalled for years with little progress.

Xbox's desire to bring more of its IPs to the screen is part of the current wave of game-to-film and TV adaptations sweeping Hollywood.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is upcoming, following three well-received films released over the past decade. God of War is also coming to Prime Video, although production faced challenges when lead actor Ryan Hurst was injured, forcing the crew to replace him with Dave Bautista.

Additionally, new Tomb Raider series, a The Legend of Zelda movie, an Elden Ring film, and a Sekiro anime are all in development.

Nowadays, game adaptations have long shaken off their past "curse," and the entire sector is thriving. Can Xbox continue to contribute to this boom in the coming years? At the very least, we certainly wouldn't turn down a live-action The Elder Scrolls series.
