Phone case manufacturer RhinoShield partnered with aerospace company Sent Into Space to conduct an extreme drop challenge at the Esrange Space Center in Sweden.
An iPhone 17 Pro fitted with an AirX case was dropped from the stratosphere at an altitude of 30,607 meters. Upon landing, the device remained fully functional, earning it a Guinness World Record certification.
This test did not involve parachutes or heating equipment. The phone was carried by a high-altitude balloon to the designated height and then released, with the entire descent taking approximately 25 minutes.
High-altitude conditions are extremely harsh, with temperatures dropping to -60°C and atmospheric pressure at just 1% of sea level, subjecting the phone to dual challenges of extreme cold and low pressure throughout the process.
After landing in the Swedish wilderness, the team spent several hours locating the device using GPS signals.
After on-site verification by Guinness officials, the phone showed no visible damage, and basic functions such as powering on/off, making calls, and taking photos were all working normally. This record is defined as the "highest drop height onto natural terrain for a phone with a protective case."
The AirX case is made from a single recyclable material, with design inspiration drawn from car airbags and the cushioning structures found in athletic shoes. The manufacturer claims it can absorb 81% of impact force.
It's important to note that due to air resistance, objects falling from high altitudes reach terminal velocity at a certain speed and do not continue to accelerate. The difference in impact speed between a fall from 30,000 meters and one from 2,000 meters is not significant; this test is more of a brand marketing stunt involving extreme experiments.
Everyday bumps usually involve hard impacts on corners against concrete, which is completely different from landing on wilderness terrain.
Many tech enthusiasts also caution against assuming this case allows you to casually drop your phone. Extreme environment tests only represent results under specific conditions and cannot be directly equated to everyday protective performance. However, this experiment has raised the bar for phone case protection marketing to a new level.
