Recently, Insomniac Games confirmed that Marvel's Wolverine on PS5 will feature only one playable protagonist: Logan, aka Wolverine. There will be no segments where players switch to control other characters. While classic mutants like Jean Grey and members of X-Force will appear in the game, they will serve as story companions fighting alongside Logan but will remain NPCs, unavailable for player control.
This design marks a clear departure from the Marvel's Spider-Man series, which featured standalone levels for Mary Jane and Miles Morales. Some of those stealth segments were criticized by players for disrupting the pacing. The development team stated that their choice to focus on a single protagonist is intended to center all creative efforts on Wolverine, fully exploring the multifaceted nature of his character to deliver a cohesive narrative and a unified action-adventure experience.
Earlier trailers showcased Jean Grey unleashing her psychic abilities, along with some unique camera angles, leading many players to speculate that there might be brief levels where they could control the Phoenix. The developers clarified that these moments are strictly part of cutscenes and scripted sequences. Although there are no playable supporting characters, the story still maintains a sense of team-based combat, with allies providing support and coordination during battles.
The announcement sparked mixed reactions within the community. Some players were relieved they wouldn't have to play through side-character levels, while other fans expressed disappointment, feeling that Jean Grey's powers could have led to innovative gameplay mechanics.
