Early Gameplay Footage of Cancelled 'Iron Man' Game by Just Cause Developers Surfaces: High-Freedom, Thrilling Open World!

Footage from the cancelled Iron Man game has surfaced online. The game was developed by Avalanche Studios in the early 2010s, the team known for Just Cause and Mad Max. Based on the leaked content, this project could have been a unique combination of open-world gameplay, large-scale destruction, and superhero action, but it ultimately failed to reach release.

The game's development had previously been confirmed by Avalanche co-founder Christofer Sundberg. According to him, the studio was indeed working on a Marvel-licensed project, but the game was cancelled before its official announcement. Now, footage from an early version has leaked online, reportedly captured from a PlayStation 3 development kit.

The footage appears extremely incomplete, but it provides enough insight into the developers' vision. Iron Man can fly freely across large environments, engage fighter jets, attack enemy facilities, and fight soldiers in close-quarters combat. The combat system resembles the Batman: Arkham series in some aspects, but Tony Stark actively uses repulsor beams, missiles, and other signature weapons. One of the most intriguing features may be environmental destructibility. In the released footage, the protagonist smashes enemies through walls, destroys obstacles, and practically carves a path through buildings. Considering Avalanche's experience in creating large-scale sandboxes and chaotic action sequences, this concept could have become the main feature distinguishing this game from previous Iron Man titles.

Of course, it is difficult to judge what the final game would have looked like based solely on an early build. Many elements appear rough, and some mechanics are clearly still in the prototype stage. However, this leak indicates that the cancelled project did have potential: the combination of flight, destruction, and open spaces could have offered fans the freedom that previous Iron Man games lacked.

However, hope remains for this hero's return to the major gaming industry. EA Motive is still developing a new Iron Man game, which was first announced in 2022. Details about this project remain scarce, but after the cancellation of the Black Panther game, fans have also begun to worry about the fate of this project. Meanwhile, Avalanche's leak serves as a reminder that a potentially very interesting version of Iron Man has been left in the past.
