Sony Interactive Entertainment recently announced that the co-op shooter Helldivers 2 has surpassed 22.9 million cumulative players since its release in February 2024, spanning PS5, Xbox Series, and PC platforms, making it one of the most popular online games of this generation.
The figure of 22.9 million represents the total player count (including shared, second-hand, and rental copies). According to estimates by third-party agencies, the game's own sales have exceeded 12 million copies. This data is current as of August 9, 2026. Sony specifically noted that new users who joined after the game was added to the PS Plus Extra/Premium library on August 12 were not included in this figure, meaning the actual reach of the player base is even larger.
Beyond the game, Sony Pictures is advancing production of a live-action Helldivers film, scheduled for global release on November 10, 2027. The film will be directed by Justin Lin, known for directing the Fast & Furious series. Previous reports indicated that Jason Momoa had been in talks for the lead role, but no agreement was reached, and casting for the lead is still ongoing.
As a phenomenal game of 2024, Helldivers 2 successfully broke through the crowded shooter market with its unique "co-op comedy" shooting experience and the satirical "Super Earth" worldview. After server expansions, balance adjustments, and cross-platform strategy optimizations, the game is maintaining strong vitality through continuous content updates.
