Fable 4's Female Protagonist Gets a Makeover! Director: It's Just a Character Creation Showcase

Playground Games, the studio developing the new Fable title, released another new demo during Gamescom—and once again, players noticed the protagonist had a different face. This marks the third time a protagonist with a distinct appearance has been shown, following the initial trailer and the June gameplay demo. The revelation has reignited debates on social media about "what the protagonist actually looks like."

Game Director Ralph Fulton laid it all out in an interview with IGN: "We've said from the start that the game features a comprehensive character customization system. This isn't exactly a revolutionary feature for an RPG, but somehow some people thought we didn't include it. So we're happy to keep demonstrating—yes, we do have character creation."

He explained that from the initial trailer to the June gameplay demo and now the new footage at Gamescom, every protagonist shown has been just one of many customizable options available to players. Regarding the female character featured in this latest demo, Fulton emphasized, "This isn't a change we made specifically in response to previous controversies over the protagonist's appearance, nor is she some special character—she is simply one of the characters you can choose and customize in the game. And people seem to really like her, which makes me happy."

In other words, Playground Games intentionally features protagonists with different appearances in each public demo to make it clear to players: you are not limited to playing as the single pre-set face provided by the developers.

As for the full extent of character customization in the final game, the developers haven't yet released a detailed demonstration of the face-creation system. However, one thing is certain: you no longer need to fret over the face shown in the trailers, because you'll be able to create your own.
