Recently, Ubisoft held a symposium for Might and Magic: Heroes III Remake, attended by the development team, original creator Jon Van Caneghem, representatives from Horn of the Abyss (HOTA), and renowned map authors, revealing extensive details on gameplay, mods, and optimizations. The game is scheduled for release in 2027 on PC, PS5, and XSX|S, fully including all content from Restoration of Erathia, Armageddon's Blade, and The Shadow of Death.
The Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remake project adheres to three core principles: staying true to the original, modernizing upgrades, and deep community collaboration. It fully retains the original core gameplay loop: overworld exploration, hex-based tactical combat, and town building/recruitment. The numerical balance for the hero system, spells, artifacts, and arenas will initially follow the original version exactly, with no unauthorized changes. The development team has obtained the complete source code of the original game as the foundation for the remake. The team includes hardcore veteran players, casual players, and newcomers, catering to different groups. They actively listen to community feedback and conduct multiple rounds of internal testing to gather opinions. There are currently no plans to remake Heroes of Might and Magic II or Chronicles, but the possibility remains open for evaluation.
All content in the remake is recreated in 3D, supporting free camera rotation and zoom. The adventure map, battlefields, and towns are all remade. Towns feature exclusive 3D recruitment interfaces and conquest animations (skippable), while also allowing switching to the classic 2D interface. Art style references medieval and Renaissance paintings; hero portraits reference historical paintings. Each faction provides four hero models covering Strength/Magic and Male/Female combinations. It is not possible to switch back to the original full 2D game body with one click (as it would require running two engines); the original old game can still be purchased and played separately. All art resources are hand-drawn and manually created, with no AI generation used.
Visuals are still being refined for LOD details, balancing graphics quality, performance, and readability of strategic information. Some hotkeys support customization. Original cheat Easter eggs are retained, and the availability of cheat codes is still under review.
The game includes three preset schemes that can be switched at any time. Classic Mode: Closely follows the original UI, perspective, and controls. Strategy Mode: Accelerated animations and enhanced information panels, suitable for quick play. Immersive Mode: Closer camera angles and simplified UI, focusing on PvE story exploration.
Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remake fully retains campaigns, single-player scenarios, and the random map generator. The hotseat mode, highly requested by fans, is confirmed to be retained. Online multiplayer features optimized matchmaking and synchronized turn mechanisms, supporting both online and offline play.
The editor is enhanced based on the complete version of The Shadow of Death, with added multi-language support. Original creator Jon Van Caneghem particularly emphasized that the map editor and player UGC are the roots of Heroes of Might and Magic III's enduring popularity over twenty years. Old maps from the original can be converted to 3D with one click: maps made with the 1999 editor can be imported into the remake with a single click. The game includes a cross-platform (PC/console) map and campaign sharing platform, pre-installing a batch of authorized classic community maps at launch.
The officials are in ongoing communication and negotiation with the Horn of the Abyss (HOTA) team. In the future, HOTA balance schemes may be provided as an optional toggle (not guaranteed at launch). Compatibility with the HOTA template editor is being explored. Initially, engine tools will have limited openness, but APIs and script interfaces will be gradually opened based on community needs. Long-term evaluation includes compatibility with well-known mods like Wake of Gods (WOG).
Currently, there are no official plans to add a "Single Hero Mode," but this will be evaluated based on community demand. Future operations will continue in the form of DLC/expansions, potentially adding new factions and heroes.
